Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends

  1. Economic Trend #1 - China and US Developing Beneficial Economic Relationships
    • Source: An article about China lowering their tariffs for the United States of America.
    • For years, China and America has been raising their tariffs against each other while also relaxing them. Currently this year, it is expected for China and America to both lower their tariffs, allowing for more trade to happen which will be beneficial to both economies.
    • A prototypical customer  would be international businesses and consumers because they are looking for ways to reduce their cost and be able to outsource and other business related activities.
    • I think this opportunity will be easy to exploit; however, if it does not benefit both economies, then international businesses will suffer along with the consumers. They will have to change how they do businesses and focus on domestic transactions instead.
    • I have been doing a lot of online shopping, so I can see how the opportunity can be really beneficial. It could encourage many people to buy more from China rather than focus on domestic goods. You do not have to be stuck with domestic businesses, but can focus on international businesses and compete for a competitive advantage.

    2. Economic Trend #2 - Coronavirus Outbreak on Global Economy
    • Source: An article describing how China's power is lowered due to the disease and how the economy is impacted.
    • The disease has caused China to focus more internally rather than externally, causing them to decrease in global economic power.
    • A prototypical customer would be businesses wanting to do more international trade outside China, as they would want to use China's weakness and replace them as a power.
    • I think this will be hard to exploit because China is used to source labor, and it is really hard for another power. Also, this is a sickness that once cure, it can help China recover successfully by having more development internally.
       3.   Regulatory Trend #1 - Functional Food is becoming more relevant
    • Source: An article that describes top changes in the food industry.
    • Functional food is food that gives more nutritious values and can vary from sports bar to vegetables.
    • A prototypical customer would be those who wants to have a healthy life style. They will be able to purchase the products cheaper because it is higher in demand, and they will be able to cater towards the consumer.
    • I think this will be easy to exploit because once it occurs, and the percentage keeps on increasing, people who wants to live a healthy life style can.
      4. Regulatory Trend #2  - False Claims & Whistle-blower against the Medical industry
    • Source: An article that lists top 10 regulatory changes in the health care industry
    • Whistle blowers are stronger and does not have to be the primary agent in false claims.
    • A prototypical customers would be those that want to follow lawsuit but does not want to ruin their reputation.
    • I think this will be easy for them to exploit the act of whistle blowing without fear of retaliation.

  1. Hi Dan! Your stories were very interesting, I wish you provided the links to the stories! You did an adequate job being detailed in your opportunity and who it affects. I really enjoyed the third opportunity as it is a big problem in the U.S. and would be something worth looking into. I would've liked to see why you picked these opportunities.

  2. Hi Dan,
I thought your articles very much reflected what is going on in the world today. The Coronavirus is very serious and I've read quite a few articles on the effects it has on the world. Most people don't realize the economical affects it has to the trade industry. I'm also really interested in the article about the food that provides more nutrients. With the push of healthy living, this kind of business is sure to thrive.
